Taree is located inland between the coastal resort towns of Port Macquarie and Forster.

The town lies on the northern banks of the Manning River, surrounded by agricultural land consisting of river flats and rolling hills.

The main shopping strips are along Manning Street and Victoria Street, the latter of which runs parallel to the river where scenic parkland lines the water's edge.
