A complex low pressure system is forecast to develop into a coastal low offshore of the Mid North Coast overnight and move southwards during Tuesday.  This low is expected to bring widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across the flood watch area and may cause minor flooding in several catchments from Tuesday.

Catchments in the Flood Watch area are relatively wet following recent rainfall.

There is some degree of uncertainty over the exact location and timing of the heaviest falls. Localised river level rises, and flash flooding are likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall. If the rainfall moves further inland then higher severities are possible.

This weather system has the potential to cause minor flooding in the Flood Watch area from Tuesday. Flood Classes (minor, moderate, major) are only defined for catchments where the Bureau provides a flood warning service.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Tuesday. Areas likely to be affected include the Mid North Coast and Illawarra forecast districts and parts of the Hunter, Northern Tablelands, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

For coastal parts of the HUNTER and MID NORTH COAST, including NEWCASTLE: DAMAGING SOUTH TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 110 km/h are possible from dawn on Tuesday, becoming likely from the afternoon onwards. Locally DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS with peak gusts in excess of 125 km/h are also possible from midday Tuesday for exposed coastal areas between Newcastle and Forster. Isolated HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is also possible for the coastal fringe south of Seal Rocks from early Tuesday afternoon. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 70 to 90 mm are possible, with isolated totals up to 120 mm.
          
          For the SOUTHERN and CENTRAL COASTAL FRINGE, including SYDNEY, WOLLONGONG and the CENTRAL COAST: DAMAGING SOUTH TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 110 km/h are likely to develop from Tuesday afternoon, extending to Ulladulla by the evening. Isolated HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is also possible for the coastal fringe north of Ulladulla from early Tuesday afternoon. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 70 to 90 mm are possible, with isolated totals up to 120 mm. 
          
          For the NORTHERN GREAT DIVIDING RANGE: Strong to DAMAGING WEST TO SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are likely to develop during Tuesday evening.
          
          Subject to the position and strength of the Coastal Low, DAMAGING WINDS and possible HEAVY RAINFALL are likely to persist into Wednesday for parts of NSW.
